HTML -> TXT : links (regexp question)

Hi,

I'm working on a function that converts a html string to pure text. so far so good, but I have a problem with hyperlinks :

what I want is the following substitution :

<a href="http://www.phpbuilder.com">PHP Builder Website</a>

becomes

PHP Builder Website (http://www.phpbuilder.com)

How can you do this using ereg_replace. Or is there a faster way?

This will give you that:

<?PHP

$string = "<a href=\"http://www.phpbuilder.com\">PHP Builder Website</a>";

preg_match("/http:\/\/.*/",$string,$match);
$url = preg_split("/['\"]/", $match[0]);
$descrip = preg_split("/['\"]>/", $match[0]);
echo "$descrip[1] ($url[0])";

?>

Note that it will only work for addresses starting with [url]http://[/url] -- that can be fixed with a bit more programming...

Looks good, but here's the tricky part...

the link is embedded in a complete text, eg.

"sdg hjgj ghd gjhsd jh gjhf <a ...>...</a> qjhsdkjhsdj hjkhj jhgjg"

It should say

"sdg hjgj ghd gjhsd jh gjhf ... (...) qjhsdkjhsdj hjkhj jhgjg"

I know I can check for the first occurence of <a, cut the link out of it, and use your solution and paste in here I lifted the other part out, but I was wondering if it's possable any other way... directly using regular expresions

preg_match("/http:\/\/.*/",$string,$match); 
$url = preg_split("/['\"]/", $match[0]); 
$descrip = preg_split("/['\"]>/", $match[0]);
$descrip = preg_split("/</", $descrip[1]);# added this line (finds the start of the closing </a> tag and splits it)
echo "$descrip[0] ($url[0])";
