strtotime and to_days giving different values.

Why do strtotime and to_days give different values? How do I get them to coordiate?

example:
$date= strtotime($GET['year']."-".$GET['month']."-".$_GET['day']);

$date = ($date / (24 * 60));

query:
select * from ads where to_days(date) > $date

It will generate results, but not the correct ones. For some reason, there will always be a mismatch in values,

for example to_days(2003-06-18) = 731749
but $date = ($date / (24 * 60)); = 733273 (assuming that the $date = June 18th 2003).

Any ideas?

There are not 24 hours in a day. There're somewhere around 23.9.

So what your saying is a minute isn't even 60 seconds,

You are attempting to take the SECONDS since the Unix Epoch of January 1, 1970 and divide it by DAYS to resolve the equivalent of TO_DAYS...which would be:

UNIX_TIMESTAMP / (24hrs 60mins 60 secs)

not

UNIX_TIMESTAMP / (24 * 60)

altering your algorithm might produce likelier results

but remember that this is the calculation of DAYS since Jan. 1 , 1970, not Jan. 1, A.D. 0 of the gregorian calendar, so you will need to take that into account the 719528 days difference (according to MySQL "SELECT TO_DAYS('1970-01-01')")

Hmmm... Interesting, originally i was using your suggested equation, however the value was far too small, how do you make up for that difference that you mentioned between the epoch (so melodramatic... I love it) and the gregorian calender.

I just added the difference at the end of the suggested equation and it worked perfectly, you are the mysql master.

Actually mordecai is right...There are 23 hours and roughly 54 minutes in a day, defined as one complete rotation of the earth...We humans just rounded up for simplicity 🙂

strtotime is a php function and to_days is an SQL function.

It could be that the underlying libraries act slightly different

Why bother about converting to days.

just use UNIX_TIMESTAMP(date) > $date without the division.
