mysql persistant connections

if i have many simultaneous visitors to a site and they are alll viewing the same page, and that page gets data from a MYSQL DB, would it be better to use a persistant connection instead of opening a new connection for each user?

which is faster - persistant or new connections?

In my own experience I find that using persistant connections is much quicker then opening a connection for each user. However the traffic to our site is quite considerable.
