I'm new to PHP - duh!! - but I have shared headers, navigation and footers that I need to put into every page on a site. Normally, I'd just focus on using Apache includes - But given the advantages of having PHP available, what is the best way to do this, from a coding perspective? The client has thrust a site rebuild upon me and I usually work in an ASP or JSP environment.

Pretty much the same as you do for Apache includes - ie:

<?php include "header.inc"; ?>
<body>
this page's info here
<?php include "nav.inc"; ?>
more stuff for the unique page
<?php include "footer.inc"; ?>

...then simply put the header/footer/nav content into the aforementioned files and call them in the correct places between your html.

If I put the include files in a folder, does it work virtually ("/includes/header.php", etc.), or is it file-style ("\includes\header.php")?

You need to call the files server based, so on linux: $DOCUMENT_ROOT/includes/header.php or on windows: \includes\header.php.
