Calculating Time

Fairly simple question.

I have a table with two TIME columns, time_in and time_out. I'd like to be able to calculuate the length of time between the two, in number of hours.

I.E.,

time_in        time_out
08:30:00       17:00:00

Returns 8:30 or even 8.5.

SELECT time_out - time_in doesn't work... (returns 87000 in this case.)

try this:

SELECT time_out - INTERVAL time_in HOUR_SECOND as time_diff FROM ...

haven't tried it - may need some manipulation ... see MYSQL date and time functions

please let me know if it worked!

Think I got it...

SELECT *, TIME_TO_SEC(time_in) as time_in_seconds, TIME_TO_SEC(time_out) as time_out_seconds, TIME_TO_SEC(time_out) - TIME_TO_SEC(time_in) as time_diff_seconds, (TIME_TO_SEC(time_out) - TIME_TO_SEC(time_in))/60/60 as time_diff_hours FROM hours

Seems to work... any problems that might arise with this?

This will work

select (TIME_TO_SEC(timeout)-TIME_TO_SEC(timein))/3600 from tablename
