grabbing information from other web site????, what does it really mean??

I just heard about grabbing information from other web sites, so that when people's web site is updated my own web site will also be updated automatically, for example: grabbing information from a few daily news website, when they are updated daily then the information of my web site will be updated as well. How does it done??What actually the concept is??

A lot of sites have RSS feeds, which is just XML content that they use. You can get it fed off of their site or check it using a cronjob every once in a while and then output it to your visitors.

Or: You have PhP open the websitelocation from which you would like to get the information. You read the location into memory, and look for specific patterns in the obtained information, eg <h1>Latest news from Cayman Islands:</h1> You can then split the text in chunks, based on those markers, and use the info on your own website. If they have a structured way of building their site, you will see the content of the site change with updates (Such as news articles) but structural elements don't.

If you intend to do this, make sure the people whose website you use as a source are either aware, or have posted a non-copyright notice: All information is in principle copyright protected.
