Source code and mysql in different domain. Can they still connect?

Hi,

is it possible to host the database in one domain and the source code in another domain? Can the source code be able to connect to that database?

yes. If i'm not mistaken, the format is

mysql_connect("x.xx.xxx.xxx:3306", "user", "pass") or die(mysql_error());

Where the x's represent the IP, and the 3306 represents the port. However I think the port isn't required. 3306 is the default port. Unless it's different, i think you can leave the colon and the 3306 out. Give it a try and see how it works.

I think they have different servers. What is the ftp server you use? I think if you open up your command prompt (assuming your using windows) and type in

nslookup domain.com

should give you the ip. Another way to get it is when you connect using ftp software, the software will usually show you the ip when establishing a connection.

some hosts won't allow you to connect to a database remotely, so it may not work!

what's wrong with using tracert or ping to get the IP of a domain?

e.g. tracert www.tripod.co.uk

output = 213.193.18.27

MySQL has security options where in foreach database we can define which (remote)hosts to allow to connect and what "rights" they have, what is the username and password.
