.htaccess Password Algorithm

Hey guys I have made a script that creates a directory and will make a .htaccess file in that directory with user given username and password. The only problem is that I don't know the encryption algorithm for .htaccess passwords. Anyone know where I can find a php script for doing this (the code not just a working version) or the actual algorithm?

but isn't the php-function crypt() enough for his purpose? i always thought that ???

LOL thanks for the signature notes guys but I'm just taking German I in school so I don't expect it to be perfect. Also I wasn't exactly looking for any encryption function because as I understand .htaccess passwords stored in the .htpasswd file must be encrypted in a certain manner. Please correct me if I'm wrong because that is my interpretation. BTW do you think you could give me the "gramatically correct" version of my sig?

I believe they are encrypted as an MD5 hash. There are many ENCRYPTERS (no decoders, is it one way) available.

Search this forum for MD5, you'll find a post that is worth reading in the Echo Lounge. You'll come to realise there is no such thing as encrypting with MD5, and that it should never be used for passwords.

About the signature, however, I think this would be a bit more appropriate: Ich glaube, ich liebe dich.
When using two verbs, you should separate with a comma, and you use ~en, which would be the suffix for a group of people.
