file uploads and timeouts

Hi,

I'm writing a photo upload script that allows mulitple picture uploads (of up to 20 photos at a time).

My question is, does the time taken to copy the photo to the server count towards the time taken to run the script, because if it does, then I'm guessing I'm stuck, unless I can change the timeout value (very unlikely, as am on a shared host),

I'm not sure about the time taken to run the script and a time out, but the file size may be a problem. The default allowable filesize in the php.ini file is something like 2meg, I had to contact my webhosting provider to have them up the size. Prior to them upping it, the script would seem to process but nothing ended up being uploaded. I think this would seem like a timeout issue...
