Damaged JPG output!

Hi!

I run a site with stock-photography. Goes pretty good, but sometimes i get a damaged file on screen, very strange.

I added a jpg file, so maybe someone can have a look.

I really have no idea what causes it, so if anyone could help me out?

I've had a similar problem in the past. Double-check to see if you FTP'd the pics in ASCII mode instead of Binary.

Hey..

I didn't FTP anything, i run an Apache webserver. All i did was convert the big files to small using Photoshop. And when i check the directory where they are in, the pictures (the small ones) are fine, it has to do with echo'ing the pictures to screen i guess (using php ofcourse).

It's definately a binary thing (as mentioned above). If you're fopen()ing them, make sure to add a "b" in there so it'll open in binary-safe mode, and won't garbage up the image.

The JPG's are echo'd to the screen, they're saved as quality:7 in binary format, using Photoshop.

Maybe the preview type should be different, i'm not sure...

Well, I'm on a mac, so I don't know what all this 'binary' stuff is all about, but it sounds like good advice.

When I save files for the web, i use the 'save for web...' option. it will save the file without any previews and other extraneous info that Photoshop might tag onto a file. I use Adobe GoLive to FTP my sites and I've noticed that the images that are uploaded have been stripped of any extraneous info. Since you are saving the files from PS directly to the final web directory, it's probably a good idea to save the files 'for web' (under the 'save' and 'save as...' options) and do the binary thing so that the images are as 'clean' as possible.

any possibility that the server stops serving out the picture before it is completed? that's sorta what it appears like to me, and since you're not uploading the files, and other images are working fine. maybe there is something in the image file that is choking the download, as, zeb stated, using the 'save for web' function in PS maybe solve this. bol.

edit:

does the 'damaged' file open up ok in ps? just not server up?

The 'damaged' files aren't damaged at all when i open them in PS. I use 'Automate' in PS to resize the 'big' pictures to smaller files to put in a directory where php finds them, so they can be served to the client.

Maybe i can automate 'Save for web' in PS as well, to avoid this?
