county characters in a string

How would if i do something like this...

$string="1234-678"

if char_count('$string' notequalto '8')
then do this

I want to count the number of characters in a string and if they are not equal to 8 then print whatever. I've checked out php.net functions, i'm not sure which one to use.

You can do this 2 ways.

$files = count_chars ( '1234-5678');
echo $files[ord('8')];

$files[ord('8')] contains the number of 8's in the string.

or ereg( '8','1234-45678' )
this will return TRUE if 8 is found.

use '!=' instead of 'notequalto'
