Storing dates in mySQL

Could someone please give me some information abuot the best way of storing dates in a mySQL database?

I have tried using timestamps, but whenever the row was updated, the timestamp was updated. Also I have found that mysql timestamps are different to PHP ones.

Any help would be much appreciated.

ive found time() to be the best, insert in a big int field in the db, you can format it very easily into any format you want with seconds accuracy.
