Textarea Enter

I'm writting a insert record form for my website, to make everyone's lives easier, I've set up all the bold and underline commands (they are in HTML, because I don't know how to make a them in the style of vB code, which I know is dangerous) but my only major problem is when Enter or Ctrl+Enter is hit, it doesn't make a <br /> or <p> automatically to change lines(i wouldn't expect it to).

Is there any way of making this happen in a textarea box?
Any help with this, or creating vB code style tags for my site would be greatly appreciated

use nl2br($message) to have it convert all newlines to <br /> for you.

In your php code, when you go to display the message that a user may post then do this:

$query = "SELECT message FROM posts";
$result = mysql_query($query);
while($postobject = mysql_fetch_object($result)) {
   $message = nl2br($postobject->$message);
   echo $message;
}

Alternatively, you can do a similar thing before you even store your message in a database/file.
