Question about Image Resizing

I've had a look at quite a few image resize scripts, and most of them work fine, however - because im still pretty new to PHP - I dont understand it fully.

What I want is a short resize script that I can include when the file is being uploaded.

The major things im interested in are:
- Being able to resize it to just 150px wide (and have the height automatically constrain - height is not an issue)

Must be able to work with both pjpg and gif files
Being able to understand it. I could quite easily go to hotscripts.com and download a script, but that would defeat the purpose.

Can anyone Help me on this or at least point me in the right direction? I've searched the forums, and nothing really helpful to my case...

Plz dont give me a link to the PHP MAnual, I've searched that too, and the stuff I found relating to this made very little sense.

perhaps something that generates the image size with html?

ie: (and warning I am new to php too)

<img src="your_image.gif" width="<?php echo $_POST['width'];?>" height="<?php echo $_POST['height'];?>"

if your image height and width are taken from a form..

one could probably make a neat function to do this if the resized image wasn't variable, ie something were 2x would multiply both height and width by 2, 3x by 3, etc. I dunno, I used something like that on my site, worked ok...

hmm not a bad idea, but dosnt playing around with the <img> attributes just change the way the pic is shown? ie. it wouldnt change the actual picture itself?

yea, do you need to picture to be resized and then saved? That might require the GD library

You can't use GD since you need GIF support. Instead, go for ImageMagick (although it's not as cool...).

Imagemagik sounds like my best option (seeing as it supports .gif files)...can you explain how I would do this? - this is all new to me 😉

GIF support has only just been dropped from GD so if you get an older version then use the functions which are explained (with examples) here http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.image.php
