what do i use for a nothing input?

This is what i want to do, these my not be the right functions.

if (strlen ($var) ==no_input) {
    print "yadayadayada";
}

so what i want to do is if a user does not input anythin at all, just presses the search button without entering anything then it returns a message

Just test to see if the variable is blank:

if ($var == '')
    {echo "yadayadayada";}

There are many ways to check for empty Inputs

if(empty($string)){
//$string is empty
}else{
//$string not empty
}

Or

if(strlen($string) == "0"){
//$string 0
}else{
//$string has 1 or more chars
}

You could even change my last from == "0" to == null

Empty() is your best bet.
