Could not find/open font - using GD

my server has GDlib (version 2) and Freetype installed...both are enabled...yet, i just can't get my scripts to use the fonts...am i missing something?

Warning: imagettftext() [function.imagettftext]: Could not find/open font in /pathtomysite/fonttest.php on line 5

i'm calling up the font file the usual way...

$font = "arial.ttf";

does it need special permissions? are there in's and out's with this stuff?

if i'm using a hosted website where i don't have access to the c:/drive then how am i supposed to use my fonts? crap, maybe i have to do this in flash then...jv

I've not worked with fonts in images before, but my guess would be that you have to upload the "arial.ttf" file onto your webspace and use it from there.

yes, that's what i'm doing...

the problem though, it seems that GD v.2 is not really a very good thing...it apparently uses the fonts that are located in a default place...so, i can set the path to the font i want to use, but GD is still looking in another place...if i don't have access to the physical server (and put my fonts there) it won't work (apparently)...

so, i'm not sure what i can do (except ask the host to put my font files into the correct location)...

unless somebody knows a way around this...

but...i'm already working on this with flash...which also allows me much more room for creative control too...

try the absolute path to the fonts.

in case the fonts are in the directory 'installedFonts' in the root-dir
and the fonttype is $fontfile it would be something like this:

$path2fonts = $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']."/installedFonts";
$font = $path2fonts."/".$fontfile;
