I'm starting to learn regular expressions but at the moment I'm stuck..

Why can't this scipt use the back reference?

$str="some text bla bla [link]arrrgg[\link]";

eregi("\[(link)\][a-z]*\[\\\\1\]", $str, $obj)

Can some smart ass out there give me a tip!

If I wanted to be a smart a**, I'd comment on the lack of the semicolon and use the tongue smiley.

OTOH, know ye well that PHP back-referencing works on parenthetical groupings, and it's likely the brackets you've got there inhibit the parser from seeing things your way....

ereg("([(link)]), etc.,

perhaps....
