I know that this is a little off topic, (if there is a solution, I am sure that it is more likely to be javascript), but this is still the best place I know to ask a general question.

Does anyone know if there is a way to either automatically close, or just to detect the presence of the history toolbar in IE?

The owner of a site I have done some work on insisted on a fixed width page, despite my disouragement. He is now moaning that the content runs off the side of the page for some users.

I am pretty sure that this is down to people having the IE history toolbar open down the left hand side of the page. I am therefore hoping to either close this automatically or detect it and display a relevant message ("close the toolbar fool"). The problem is that I have yet to find any way to do this.

Anyone know if it is possible?

this is solved easily : just open a popup-window without toolbars etc. containing the site

for what I can tell, your client wants something to be done, that is impossible to do
since you are the 'techie', you know what your talking about, so try to convince him

and if he does not listen, I would dump him as a client, simply because you cannot fulfill his demands

furthermore : would he tell the plumber to use a saw instead of a pipe-cutter ? I guess not !

I bloody hate the site anyway! Case of too much customer interference buggering up the whole concept.

Cheers for the help anyway. Unless something else comes to my attention I think it's a choice of popping up a new window or sticking with it how it is.

you are not alone, being a fellow webmaster I have the same problem every day, dealing with interference from clients, building sites I do not like myself
but as long as they pay, they get what they want
