Asc() or Mid() ?

I have a .vbs file with a few scripts that I would like to run in php but not sure how its done.

vb ex:

str = str & Asc(Mid(stats, 28, 1)) & ","

I did a search through the manual for Asc and Mid but didn't find any results. Is it possible in PHP or is there an alternative?

May have answered my own question. I'm going to try substr() and ord()
