Is there a php-based text editor (HTML) anywhere?

I am looking for a text editor, kinda like the one i'm writing in now, for my php app. I need just the regular stuff, font sizes, bold, alignment stuff. Is there any out there anywhere???? gracias.

I looked over that site briefly and I'll look more indepth at it tomorrow. For clarification, I'm going to need a text editor (output as html) so my users will be able to create and edit messages with it. Not so much looking for a php design/dev tool, as I am looking for something that transfers via HTTP? does that make sense? no? damn it's late....

Any sane implementation of such an editor would run on the the client machine of the person using it, not the server (do you want to wait for the duration of a whole http round trip to see the effects of your clicking the "bold" button?)

So such an editor would not be written in a server-side language such as PHP, but in a client-side language. Perhaps as a Java applet, or maybe Flash, or maybe Javascript.

Quite probably such a client-side app will use some sort of remote scripting thing to communicate with the server without needing repeated page refreshes whenever something sufficiently significant happens, but the guts of the editor would still be on the client.

It only works on IE 5.5 for Windows and Mozilla on all OS.

I have seen a lot of CMS providers using this, it is a client side application which presents the information almost identical to how it will look when uploaded.

both of the above products only support IE. is there any similar tools out there that we can redirect our users to if they aren't using said browser? thanx...

they have a flash-based editor...it's not very good yet, but it does the trick...look in their WYSIWYG editors section...

also, if you hunt around, like at flashcomponents.com (or something like that) you will find some rudimentary free flash text editors...

the reason these things only work on IE5.5+ is because of the contenteditable tag which m$ incorporated into their OS...if the other browsers supported this (which is not a compliant w3 tag i may add) then they could play along...

and oh yes, i forgot...you could check this out...

www.textpattern.com (home of the one of the greatest bloggers ever and oliver) and LOOK for "textile" or "texpattern"...it's a rudimentary text editor that has gone about as far as these thing will go until they are standard practice in browsers...his works with php...

(i sure hope safari makes use of these things soon)

I personally use a proggy called Crimson Editor...

it's freeware available on tucows (http://www.tucows.com) and it has color-coding in a wide variety of popular languages (most notable PHP, PERL, ASP, JAVA and C/C++).

InteractiveTools claims a crossbrowser version is in alpha testing; I think it's got a way to go - their demo inexplicably didn't work for me in Mozilla...
