Why is keyword not inserting?

Can anyone help me in why the Kyword is not inserting into the mySQL table? It looks ok to me! any help? Please?

Add this to the top of your php code:

extract($_POST);

Then change your SQL statement to match this:

$sql = "insert into dir_keywords(id, keyword, date) values('', '$your_keyword', '$CURRENT_DATE')";

This assumes the variable name you are passing is "your_keyword". I noticed the form has your keyword input box named "keyword". If this is the form you are using to post to the SQL statement, then change the SQL statement accordingly. Also, is CURRENT_DATE a variable you are trying to pass from somewhere too? If so, that's why I changed it too...

It's still not inserting the keyword, I'm going nuts man. I did what you told me to do, and it doesn't give any errors or anything.

Well I am fairly new to PHP & SQL but could you not just do a

$sql="insert into dir_keywords SET id='', keyword='$your_keyword, date=$CURRENT_DATE";

Hope that works. . .but maybe I am totally off!

Is it given you any type of error message or is it going through like it add the record?

OK, let's start from scratch here... I know, I know... 1 step forward, 2 steps back. Bare with me for a bit.

First, let's setup the HTML page that will have the form on it. Copy the following code into a page, and save that page as form.html (original huh?)

Note the following, and why I wrote the form this way:

Don't need to add the "add" variable to the form post since we are including it in the form as a hidden field.
Don't need a hidden text field for $id, since it is an auto-increment field in your table.

Don't need a date field, since we will generate it on the sendkeyword.php page.

Now, let's create the form we are going to use to insert the data into the DB table.

Copy the following code into a blank page, and save that as sendkeyword.php

Now, open your form, and give it a whirl.... Note, this is a starting point, so we can all get on the same page. I remove the error checking. You can verify the insert by opening your myPHP (if you use that), or just executing a select * query and looping the results. Let me know how that goes, and we'll go from there.

BTW Tiger (r270ba for those of you not in South Carolina), using the SET clause in an insert statement is not wrong (from what I am told), but not the recommended way either. The recommended way to do an insert is:

INSERT INTO tablename (field1, field2, field3) VALUES ('value1', 'value2', 'value3')

Gotcha. . .any reason that one way is better than the other? Believe it or not I am still a gamecock fan (as long as we don't play each other). It is good to see someone in this type of field who is aware of college athletics (I am assuming you are b/c you spouted off some nittany lions). And by the way, DeltaRho. . .fraternity?

I am B-I-G into college athletics... During football season, I prop up on the couch with my laptop in one hand, my remote in the other, and a cold beer close by... Done some of my best work on frigid Saturday afternoons ;-)

The rivalry may tense up, as there is speculation that the ACC may try to court USC to get their 12th team. I think USC is happy in the SEC, and wouldn't bail like Miami did to the Big East though. Besides, our rivalry doesn't need any help to become more tense. Maybe I will get a chance to meet you at Williams-Bryce this year, since you all are coming into our yard this year.

I am not really sure if my way is better, and if so, why it would be. The way I see it is this: The mySQL manual says the way I do it is the preferred method. mySQL can be picky with things sometimes, and consequently, you could spend hours chasing your tail in circles troubleshooting a problem, when you could have solved it in five minutes by opening the manual, and following the prescribed methods. Since I am geeked (as is proven by the handle I chose), you can imagine, I am a stickler for following the rules, conventions, and procedures established by manuals. (but that's just me)

I also subscribe to the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" theory, so if your way works for you, go for it!

I think following the conventions promotes consistent coding, which makes it much easier for others to help you with troubleshooting problems.

Just my two cents...

Well I will probably be in Columbia for the game. I understand your reasoning on the "right and wrong" way to code the SQL statement. I will change my way since I am very new to this whole scene. So what do you think of Miami and V Tech joining the ACC??? If you want PM me so we don't continue to use this trhead to talk about atheletics.
