Using /usr/bin/mail instead of sendmail?

Hi all,

I'm completely lost on this and was hoping to find some help, as I've searched all over to no avail.

On the site I'm currently working on, I cannot use sendmail due to chroot jail. However, the sys admin has put a copy of mail in the jail, and says I should be able to use that. I'm not sure how to go about sending mail to it and don't know if I need to use ini_set to override the php.ini sendmail settings.

Any help is seriously appreciated! Thanks!

That'd be the idea; but, I dunno if ini_set will override that setting in php.ini.

Hmm, looks like SMTP is "PHP_INI_ALL"; but sendmail_path is "PHP_INI_SYSTEM". Therefore, (as you seem to be on Unix, what with jail(8) and all, you might be outta luck.

Someone smarter than me might have a suggestion. Keep your chin up!! 🙂

Hey man...thanks for the help.

I can definitely change the settings in php.ini if needed, but I wasn't sure if I could set the sendmail path to /usr/bin/mail?

I've tried using popen and exec on /usr/bin/mail and get no errors, but the mail just never arrives 🙁

I've tried this:

$output = shell_exec("echo $info | mail -s \"$subject\" $to");
print ("$output");

but I get no output at all, and no errors.

You have access to php.ini, so you could set the path there easily.

Hmm, mail doesn't arrive, but doesn't return FALSE? I'd suspect security measures, like a firewall, perhaps. The first time I firewalled a server I "constipated" it by making the rules too restrictive on the loopback interface. But there are so many possibilities....
