$DOCUMENT_ROOT doesn't work

i'm trying to access the root directory by using $DOCUMENT_ROOT. i've tried several ways, such as $GLOBALS('DOCUMENT_ROOT') and nothing works. my only guess is that my version of apache (version 2.0.45) doesn't support it. can anyone help?

$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']

OK, then, the host is in "safe mode" and DOCUMENT_ROOT is covered by safe_mode_protected_env_vars ?
