I use the Pioneer DVR105... nice little package, burns -R though, good for PS2 <ahem>backups...
The new Sony one does both + and - R/RW, and apparently supports overburning as well, so you can get those 90min CDR's for larger capacity. (Just make sure you have about £200 for it !)
I don't think any will burn at 8x at the moment, and you have to be careful which DVR's you get - especially if you are burning at 2 or 4x, there have been quite a few "fake" branded disks being put about, which are only capable of 1x, but sold as 2 or 4x... You can check for this (don't know how though) but look at www.cdrhelp.com (I think) which might be of some help.
The types of disks that each burner can use is usually stated in the docs that came with the drive (even an OEM version has this!) If you are going second hand - all I can say is beware... and get the docs from the manufacturer if you can - else you'll be making coasters for your street. (Or frisbees if you so wish..)
