How do you print just the start of a string?

I am a Newby, but having a great time learning! So please be gentle!

I have a MySql database and in it is a table with news stories. On the front page i have a dynamic list of the most recent. I would like to print the first 100 or so letters, but everything I have tried either prints nothing, or the whole story.

It has got to be simple, but I am starting to feel simple!:rolleyes:
