php.ini and sessions

Hi guys- my first post- woohoo!

I've been teaching myself some php lately, but I've hit a wall.

There's a site I'm working on, but I need to pull it offline (don't ask)

On my own machine I have phpdev running apache 2.0.39 (or 1.3.27, I dunno- I'm on Windows 98) and php 4.2.3

Thing is, I'm trying to get the sessions to work, and they're having none of it.

I've had a little go, and when I start a session (or think I am! lol) the $PHPSESSID is being displayed. on this page I also register session_username.

Click on a new page and the session_username is null. What's going on?

I'm pretty sure I'm on the right tracks with the php.ini files, but I don't know if I'm tweakin the right bits!

Would really appreciate the asisstance. (how DO you spell that word?)

I set the

register_globals

to On, even though I now understand that that ain't too cool security-wise, but This is just for a controlled offline run, so I'm not too fussed....

That didn't seem to sort it though...

any clues?

alternatively, is there another way I can hold on to the users information easily?

I searched thru my php folders, and saw that

php.ini

had the

session.save_path

set at c:/php/sessions

so the old ticker got going, 😕 and I thought I'd go find this c:/php/sessions... (we all know what's coming don't we?)

THERE WASN'T ONE! :eek:

Well, I sent the session.save_path to the phpdev folder I had, et viola.

knackers.

I feel real annoyed because I've basically taught myself php from scratch and have www.rktx.co.uk to show for it. It's not too sharp from a design point of view, but technically I've got some pretty nad loopage going on!
I've done it all by myself, and was adamant I wouldn't put some "GOOGLE-IT" post on one of these boards, but I did. And before I got a reply I sorted it.

with your version of php you should be using $_SESSION instead of session_register.

In every page where you want the session data to be avialble you must put session_start() at the top

I'm calling the session_start() function on each page, so that's all good, but what's different about $_SESSION?

I learnt on an older version of php, y'see...

I've seen a few of these abbreviated '$_' thingys as I've been bobing round the APIs and documentation, but havn't picked up on what's going on there...
