Problems reading and writing files

I'm having problems writing files right now, and it has to do with me not being able to get to the correct folder

lets say my regular stuff is located at:

/home/bubba/web/

and I have my passwords and news files in txt files in

/home/bubba/safefromweb/

I need to wriite to that folder but it wont let me


$fp = fopen ("$DOCUMENT_ROOT/../safefromweb/$date.txt", "w");

what am I doing wrong? I DONT want to keep the files in a chmod777 folder because its not a good idea so I have to put them in folder "safe from the web"

Once I figure out how to write and read files properly I should be on a roll then

Try calling the absolute path:

$fp = fopen ("/home/bubba/safefromweb/$date.txt", "w");

If that doesn't work, check your permissions.

I had already tired that and I get

Parse error: parse error, expecting T_STRING' orT_VARIABLE' or `T_NUM_STRING' in /home/bubba/web/weblog/news.php on line 31

$fp = fopen ("$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']/../safefromweb/$date.txt", "w");

maybe my syntax is messed up

A bit - PHP's not keen on quotes inside variables inside quotes for some reason.

$fp = fopen ($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']."/../safefromweb/$date.txt", "w");

ok, now I get:

(this isnt code, just what I get)

document root = /usr/local/apollo/web_rootz/main/bubba.domain
blog directory = /usr/local/apollo/web_rootz/main/bubba.domain/safefromweb/

the first 2 lines, I did as a debug ( i renamed a few things here to protect me a little, but I have no idea how they have me setup? I'm pretty sure the document root was equal to something else a few months back, but how am I supposed to make it work like this?😕 🙁

why does one equal

/usr/local/apollo/web_rootz/main/bubba.domain
and the other equal
/home/bubba/web/weblog

they should start the same right? this is confusing me

In a 'virt-host' environment, they may have either moved you (!) or else the paths are aliases of each other, so to speak. For example, /home could be a link to /usr/local/apollo/web_rootz/, or something like that.

Write a script thus:

<?
echo $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'];
?>

and see what PHP thinks is the directory...

I already did that, thats what the 2 debug lines are

print("document root = ".$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']);//debug

resulted in:

document root = /usr/local/apollo/web_rootz/main/bubba.domain

is it their mistake? if so what do i tell them? I've ran phpinfo() also and noticed they are using phpv 4.1.2 :eek:

this has been driving me crazy 😕
