Voting System

I was going to use a voting system to allow members of my site to vote for the top 5 teams in the country right now.

Points are awarded as follows:
1st - 5
2nd - 4
3rd - 3
4th - 2
5th - 1

There are over 100 teams, so I'm going to use the drop-down menu selecter. Would it be best to give each team an id. So my fields would be id, team, points. and when the user submits their vote i need to $value + points and keep it adding up right?

how would you recommend setting it up to do weekly votes? if i want voting to be open from 12:01 AM Sunday to 11:59 PM Monday each week?

your idea for structure should work

and for the second, depending on if you want to archive the previous weeks or not, you could run a cron job at say 12:01 AM Sunday to clear all the votes so they are initialized to no votes and/or rating, etc....

But, I'd like to keep an archive of the ratings.

i was a little abrupt saying that, but you can still keep the old ones also, you would just have to have the php page that is being run with cron to archive them, and then set them to zero

you could put another/more fields in your db called prev_weeks_vote or something like that and have the number put in that column and then set the vote column to zero and do as i stated above
