handling \r\n in textarea's

I have a big comment form which goes to a plain-text sendmail program.

the line i'm concerned with is:
$message .= "Application Description: \n". $applicationdesc ." \n";

if the user hits enter in this box, it becomes a instead of a size line break (hope that makes sense).

what am I looking to do here to fix this? I assume a simple str_replace(), but what is my 'seeker' and what am I replacing it with to make it come out as a single and not a without using html?

looked at- tried a couple things... not what I need.

I have a text box, such as the one I'm typing into at this very moment.

If I type:

hi
hi

it renders in my email as:

hi

hi

i don't need to convert to a character, because the email is sending out in plain text format- I actually end up still having the extra space, but instead of a blank line, it now has on it.

any other ideas?
