Sorting Day of the week not in Alphabetical order HELP

Good afternoon all,

I am working on a shopping cart that required the items to be listed in the shopping cart by day. There are only three days of the week to be used:

Sunday
- Item One
- Item Two

Tuesday
- Item One
- Item Two

Thursday
- Item One
- Item Two

However when I do my DB Query and put it in the "sort by day, itemcode" and then print the result, it sorts everything by alphabetical order. It prints as follows:

Sunday
- Item One
- Item Two

Thursday
- Item One
- Item Two

Tuesday
- Item One
- Item Two

And that is not what I want.

How do it get it to sort and display in the order I wish? Any Ideas. Using PHP4 and mySQL for the DB.

how do you want it ordered?

If as i assume that you want it ordered by day of the week (where sunday is b4 tuesday which is b4 thursday) then use the mysql function of DAYOFWEEK

Select ..... FROM ...... ORDER BY DAYOFWEEK(now())

DAYOFWEEK returns the integer of the day of the week. So here in the UK sunday is 1 and saturday is 7

so for me

SELECT DAYOFWEEK(now());

returns 3

Back at the computer again trying to sort this out. The text name is set for the date as "Sunday", "Tuesday" and "Thursday".

I need SQL to sort so that it will display

Sundays Items together

Tuesday Items together

Thursday Items together

right now it sorts by "day" and displays

Sunday
Thursday
Tuesday

You are better off storing your days as numbers corresponding to the day of the week. In the UK, 1 is Sunday which represents the first day of the week.

Here in the US, 0 represents Sunday (again, the first day of the week.)

This way, when you sort, it will always sort it as 0, 2, 4 for Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Then use the date() function to translate that day into the actual day's name... It is a bit trickier, but a little tough work early on, will make things tons easier later on...

Believe me, I am finishing up a Calendar app I am writing, and have found it to be easer to manipulate later when the days are numbered instead of defined by text.
