win apache problem (pre-php problem :) )

hi all,
on winxp i've had apache 2.0.45, now .46 with php 4.3.2 and latest mysql running fine as localhost for pre-publish testing

without a noticable (to me) reason, apache has stopped working in a strange way;
- service still runs
- my apache-conf server test says syntax is fine
- the apache service is using ALL available CPU up to 100%
(i think this is related to the problem, i don't think thats normal, correct?)
- my error log says;

is 250 worker threads normal? is that whats using all my cpu?

when i try http://localhost/ it just never gets there, The page cannot be displayed

any help, advice, pointers, etc would be greatly appreciated!

Nothing wrong with that. Standard notices. 250 threads is the default.

Apache's httpd.conf could be messed up.

If you did not do ANYTHING and this just started happening one day, something could have gotten corrupted, just by chance, a write error, a bad hard drive, ...

You should check Apache2\conf\httpd.conf or just re-install everything.

Apache taking up 100% of the CPU sounds like something is in a loop. A php script?

Even if you do not want to build your own Apache server, you can get a lot of pointers on setting it up.

What is your localhost index file

If php isnt installed/got corrupted, then if your index file of localhost = index.php...you will get a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error.

Sometimes if you are connected to the inet, typing in http://localhost can take time, ESP on a 56k and timeout..in this case it is better to use 127.0.0.1

Also, perhaps as mentioned above, a script has an infinite loop or httpd.conf is corrupted/editted.

The port of apache could have been changed from 80 to "Service For This User Only" on 8080 🙂

I'm having exactly the same problem.

I installed Apache 2.0.48 earlier today (no PHP & mySQL yet), but I never got it to run properly.

All I get is 100% CPU consumption, and same error messages but with "Child 4912" instead. http://localhost/ or http://127.0.0.1/ don't work either.

Any ideas?

Yep!

I have McAffee antivirus and firewall. I tried closing them (through system tray, task manager, services, everything) but nothing changed. I uninstalled them and the Apache server runs very well.

Thanks for your help! Is that a known incompatibilty? Is there a solution so both programs can co-exist in the same system?

Yeah, it's a known bug, but no one seems to know why. Though, it's a fairly rare bug. I've heard that people have gotten it to work with no problems. The only available solutions right now is to uninstall one or the other, or use Apache 1.3.x instead
