Row order

Hello, I'm a newbie here...

I have an SQL question, I am building a simple database that I want to use for my weblog. I have everything working but when I make a new post to the database, it ends up at the bottom of the table. I am wondering how I go about putting all new information added to the database at the top of the table. If I can't do that, I am wondering how I go about displaying the information in a database table in reverse order so the new stuff ends up at the top.

yes i agree, its an amazing thing that happens when people bother to actually SEARCH AND READ before posting garbage thats already been answered million times.

People learn a lot more by SEARCHING AND READING than they do by being LAZY and posting and waiting for an answer without SEARCHING AND READING

Hey Pittperson, don't sweat Iceman... That isn't representative of what this forum is about...

Don't hesitate to bring your questions to the forum. We have all asked a question and realized the answer was right there in front of us.

I am a firm believer that the only stupid question is the one that goes unasked.

BTW, I am not sure what you found to figure it out, but here are some tips:

1) You can do a sort on a unique ID field. As long as your ID is a primary key that auto increments, then you know you won't have duplicates, and the higher the number, the later the post, so your SQL would go something like:

SELECT * FROM table_name ORDER BY unique_ID DESC

2) You can also do a sort on a date field the same way. Your date is stored yyyy-mm-dd (in a field that is a DATE type) so it is easy to sort on something like that too. The only trouble with this is if you want to display the date via php, you have to throw in some extra php code to format it in a different format like mm-dd-yyyy, or dd/mm/yyyy or whatever...

3) You can also sort on a TIMESTAMP type field, but it gets tricky manipulating that as well...

Hey, thanks for the welcome.

I ended up using:
SELECT * FROM table_name ORDER BY unique_ID DESC

It seems like the simplest way do order things assuming there is an id field.

And thanks for the other idea too, sorting by a date field is looking tempting at the moment, I might have to try that.

You're welcome...
Depending on your "noob-i-ness", I will caution you that working with DATE type fields can be frustrating (manipulating them for display that is) Be patient with that, and look in the manual for the following functions to see different ways you can manipulate the DATE field:
ereg(), date(), mktime(), and pretty much all of the rest of the date and time functions...
