PHP or ASP

I havent really learnt ASP much at all. But ive looked at its syntax, and it looks very poor.

However ASP has benefits, You can then go into VB, ASP.Net and VB.Net.. So if that sounds like you. I think you should give it ago. However if your anti microsoft. You'll soon notice its a Microsoft Language.

So than you have PHP. Quite easy to learn, and can also go into other languages as php has similar syntax to C.

If money is what you want ASP is what you need at the moment. But very very soon things will change and php will be the ultimate Server Side programming language. Also talking about money. It does cost a bit to start with ASP. You'll need to have a IIS server/ PWS Server. They can come with your WIN OS. But ig you dont have Win2k Server, Win2k Pro or WinXP Pro. Your gonna have it hard, to get a server for it.

On the other side php is free, and should remain free for a very long time. PHP requires Apache but can also be on IIS, PWS, Xamiti(Positive i spelt that wrong), etc.

I think its up to you. But the response ill give you and probablu 90%+ of the Forum will give you will be PHP.

Ive been to many forums.. Some which are just ASP, and ones like this just PHP.

Theres always gonna be bias towards either. But most of them do say PHP is a good language to start. So maybe good something good to add to your resume.

I learned ASP few months after I started my PHP. Well, IMO, ASP has complicated syntax (I asked 10 of my friends, all of em said ASP is simpler... what?), it doesnt support REGULAR EXPRESSION (I am sure I cant say this one coz I know just a tiny part of ASP... haha...), what else? um... variable name is just like any other words... I used to get confused..., you need longer code to do something as compared to the lines of code in PHP (huh?)....

I think whoever that code in PHP and then switch to ASP for a while will face some problems, such as:
1. You add $ sign before variable name
2. You add ; (semi-colon) at the end of each line
3. You type echo or print rather than response.write
4. You had nightmare every night till you finish your project...

I started learning PHP in april and quickly got th hang of it. the $ signs in front of variables is so simple its brilliant. the built-in POSIX regex and defaultly-compiled PCRE support is also great. its syntax is similar to C and therefor you can go into many other languages from it. i've looked at ASP a bit and imediately realized one thing: it would be way too hard to integrate someone else'e code if they used a different language than you (PerlScript instead of JScript for example). With PHP, you're only learning one language and there are thousands upon thousands of resources availiable online. PHP is also free, as is Apache, MySQL, and Linux, so it will cost you less to rent server space because it costs the host less to keep it running. So if money is a concern i'd stick with PHP.

i've never looked that far into ASP so i can't really say much about it's benefits. but i have been using PHP for about 3 1/2 months and have already began to delve into some more advanced stuff. if i had been using ASP i probably would still be typeing out response.write's (14 characters! echo is 10 characters less!) .

so in conclusion i'd have to say PHP but go with what you want, i'm not trying to convert anyone here :rolleyes:

I would recomend buying short books on both and then give them a read. See which you prefer because you can do almost if not exactly the same things on both.
