- The personal "measurements" and private "requirements" of individuals seeking a potential mate while checking out dating Web sites. (I will never look at certain employees the same way again.)
- The ridiculously overpriced items that people "had to have" on auction Web sites. (I could outbid individuals by a dollar each time they made a bid online and they'd never know.)
- How much money employees have in their checking and savings accounts, while conducting their online banking. (On more than one occasion, I knew that someone had bounced a check before he did.)
- Employees exploring pornographic Web sites. (You'd be amazed how many times I've had to begin an investigation into an employee because of something like this.)

Anyway, all that stuff doesn't bother me. Hell, I am the sysadmin.

I don't have much to comment about the second. if you work for a company and don't realize that everything you do is (or should be, anyway) logged then you more than deserve to get caught....

I run serveral blog sites... even a personal one. And I do think about what I post... I usually stay away from ranting and getting TOO personal since that's what causes trouble in the first place.

Some people like to express themselves... exactly how they feel in a particular moment. So you're angry for about 5 minutes... that's no big deal.. but if you write it down... it lasts forever, not just 5 minutes. At least that's how it'll feel to your reader.

piersk, not all people know their friends read their journals. Sometimes they just 'accidently' find it... sometimes with google, or just seeing a url briefly.

As for the second article... i'm a sys admin too. You'd be surprised what we've found on our public and staff machine. =P

What people don't seem to realize is that a blog is NOT a diary. If you are writing something for others to see, you have to accept the risk that the people you are writing about might see it too. If you want to write a diary, and keep it private, do NOT publish it on the web.

I'm pretty confident that none of my friends will read my blogs, even if I had written things about them. I'm always sure never to give names, and if I do talk about someone specific, I'm always as vague as I can possibly be so guessing couldn't be possible -- but, I can still understand who I'm talking about of course.

My one friend soon learned what website I use to post my blogs at ( http://www.kuro5hin.org ), and then later learned the alias I posted under (the same as this one actually, "clearbreach"). But, as well, I'm confident enough to know that my friends aren't exactly technically smart enough to know to search the actual website for my name. I rely on their lack of computer/Internet skillls to guide me through further anonymity with what I write.

The assumption of naivety within others shouldn't be considered a cast iron way of ensuring anonymity within any public environment such as the internet.

Anything that is written can be searched and viewed, if only by accident, certain phrases and words can bring sites that have totally different meanings...

(try Wet Set in Google... looking for swimming pool heaters by this company - you'll see what I mean)

Assuming that people are ignorant and relying on their weaknesses can only lead to one conclusion...

One day, someone will accidentally find it.
