Varying Background & Authentication

I've been working on a database driven
authentication system that has custom page
colors for the different users. But for some
reason the following code is not varying the
colors. It all seems simple enough but is still
not working. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

checking in if condition is done with ==
eg if ($bgcolor == "0") not if ($bgcolor = "0")

Okay, I fixed that and it is definitely checking for matches,
since it is failing to match on the password check. If I
, at the end of the failure line, print the password as
retrieved from the database I get:

Resource id #3

instead of the actual password.

I realize these are lame newbie questions, but hey I have
to start somewhere.

Hey Kevin,

Thanks for the help, lol.

I was only really looking for a nudge in the right direction
not for someone to rewrite my work for me roflol.

Now I have to dif thru it and try to understand everything you
did, since this was a learning exercise and not a real project
I'm going to use the techiniques you demonstrated to write
something new, so the lesson will not be lost.
