Counter returning error message

I have just succesfully installed my first php script, a links directory. However, I have a permanant effor message at the bottom of my pages as below.

Warning: fopen(count.dat) [function.fopen]: failed to create stream:

I have been to the link on php help site, but really dont understand how to remedy this error.

Can someone explain in simple terms how to do this

You should specify for what purpose you are opening the file, reeading? writing? appending? Read the manual on this.

If are writing into the file, do this:

$file="count.dat";
$fp=fopen($file,"w");
//blah... blah...

Another thing you should do is to chmod the file so that you have the permission to read/write/execute... 777

Here is my file. I also change mode to 777 but there is no change

try and aslo CHMOD the folder the files in to 775

I saw no errors on your page. So, what would be the problem? You counter is not displaying or it isnt incrementing?
