Storing large amounts of text

I've got a database that I am using to store posts for my website (want to replace blogger with my own tool) but the table will only hold small posts. What is it I have to do to allow the 'post' field to hold large amounts of text (incase I really want to rant about work someday 🙂 )? Right now I have the field set as LONGTEXT...

Yeah man.. use BLOB instead of LONGTEXT. I think blobs can hold 2¹⁶ (65536) characters. That should be plenty.

Or...write each post to a file and store a reference to the file in the db.

TEXT fields can store up to 65,000 characters... MEDIUMTEXT can store up to 16,000,000. Is that enough? :-)

How bout LONGTEXT at 429,496,295 characters?

I've found something out.... I just post (literally) 10,000 random characters it will work but when I actually type something up (that is only 1,000 characters) it won't store it. Here is what I am trying to post if that will help (and for a small laugh):

So I had to drive 125 miles to Grafton, WV for work today. I love West Virginia, I could drive around there all day. The speed limit is 70 on the interstate and 55 on streets that would normally be 35. I passed a kid in a drivers ed car on the way there, it was great....I passed him doing about 82 while he was poking along at about 69. Then on my way home I went to pass a guy who's speed was not satisfying me and the guy infront of him decided he wanted to make a left hand turn so abort the pass.

Anyway, Once I got <a href="http://www.lrp.usace.army.mil/rec/lakes/tygartla.htm">there</a>, I found out I could have accomplished the work in Pittsburgh and saved myself a trip. But, I made $.39/mile so I made an extra $97.50. Maybe I'll use that to pay off my credit card bill....

While in Grafton, I discovered that it is home to the fastback mustang. I saw 3 of them, at 3 different houses with in 3 minutes of each other (I dont really know if they were 3 minutes apart, it just sounded good). I want to leave mine in the driveway and take one of them.

Where does the text get cut-off? Is it at a specific location each time?

when I actually type something up like the above little post, it just doesnt get stored in the table at all.

Try to addslashes() before inserting to the db. A 10,000 random characters contains only aA-zZ but the story contains more than just aA-zZ, it also contains quotes which should be escaped.

I guess, that's where the problem lies. HTH 🙂

A note about addslashes() though: if your string is already escaped, dont use it.

This might happen is say, you were receiving the data from a form, and magic_quotes_gpc is set to 1.

mysql_escape_string() may be a better option as well.

^{^Hello,} I used the search function to find this thread. I'd also liked to thank you guys for the addslashes and the rest of the tips, it was driving me bananas that I can't seem to add the uploaded filtered htmls into my database. Just wanted to show that the answers were appreciated by other people.
