Autodetect Quicktime or Windows Media Player

Has anyone had any success with autodetecting whether a user has Quicktime or Windows Media Player installed on the system, regardless of computer platform?

Any help appreciated.

I doubt its possible since you'd have to use JavaScript to detect for the plugin. This would be fine for detecting WMP, but Quicktime no longer comes with javascript controls.
