Another error, what the heck is ranlib?

I'm trying to build php-4.3.2 on mac ox 10.2.6 but I keep getting this error:

ranlib: warning: cannot infer operation mode from .libs/libphp4.a'
ranlib: you must specify a MODE
Tryranlib --help' for more information.
make: *** [libphp4.la] Error 1

Everything goes smooth until I make install and then this. Even when I just ./configure --with-apxs

Please enlighten me

ranlib creates an index of the contents of an archive (in this case .libs/libphp4.a) and writes that index to the archive.

What do you get if you execute ranlib --version ?
