Hello Php builder. I am brand new to ur site. I know html and would like to learn php. Does anybody know how to learn it and what software to download?

Well asuming you allready have php up and running someware,

go to www.php.net and get a copy of the official documentation, its really easy to follow (in comparison to most official docs) and should be able to answer may of your questions

Also search these forums for specific areas of interest, somebody has usually had the same problem, if not post a question.

Search for articels and tutorials, there are loads out there jsut use your favorate search engine and do a search for PHP +tutorial and you should find plenty of info.

This is how i learnt the basics, and never had a problem finding out how to overcome particular problems

1.Grab the copy of your PHP from HERE
2.Download Apache from .Here
3If you would like to use a database, mysql is the right choice and you can get it from HERE
4.For installing all of them, this Tutorial might help you.
5.Also, dont forget to download the Manuals for PHP and mysql.They are the best resources all the time besides this forums.
6.For books, tutorials and other information this Thread might help you

AND do u really need apache on windows 98. i dont understand the installation even with the nmanual. HELP!!

Yes, you will need Apache to view the output from PHP in your browser.

On the PHP website, (and Apache too), you want the Windows binary.

But to be honest, starting out on PHP, I'd go down the easy road & install a pre-made package of Apache & PHP, like this one:

You could use the personal web server which comes with Windows 98. However Apache is open source and a lot more stable than PWS.

If the installation and setup is a bit daunting you could always find a web host who provides PHP. There are plenty out there, some of them are even free and it saves all the hassle of downloading, installing and configuring.

I learnt most of my PHP from the Wrox Professional PHP Programming.

By the way, i went onto the site mentioned above, but, they have a tempory cap on new members if u dont have a referal code. They wont give you a referal code. Does anybody know of any other free php supported web hosts?:
