Getting the system date from the server

I have been advised to modify my PHP calendar script to have it display the current month and the next month instead of a whole year. When the script was written, the author elected to use a whole year to generate the calendar, and to hard-code the year into a variable. Is there a function in PHP that can grab the current month, day, and year from the server, and return it back to the script so it can be used as three separate variables? In essence, I'm looking for something along the lines of

getdate does that for you, read the link above, there are parameters you use to get the certain day, month, year, etc...like...

$today = getdate();
$month = $today['mon'];
$day = $today['mday'];

etc...

Another question. I first checked the PHP manual to see if it's already documented there. I have a date in YYYY-MM-DD (MySQL date) format, and I need to reformat it to MM-DD-YYYY. In the comments section, I saw stuff that will work from within MySQL, but I already have my date in a $date variable and wish to work on that. Would it be easier to work with the date variable by itself, or would passing the day, month, and year as individual variables be easier to implement.

i usually use them as seperate variables rather than one variable

If it is all bunched up in YYYY-MM-DD format, then you need to break it down, and reconstruct it into te needed format.

// First break up the variable into an exploded array
$sepdate = explode("-", $date);

// Use the array values to reconstruct the data into the format you need.
$rebuiltdate = date("m-d-Y", mktime(0, 0, 0, $sepdate[1], $sepdate[2], $sepdate[0]));

Oh, I usually use them separately as well, but this should do what you need if you are going to use it all as one stored value in a DATE type field of a table...
