Special Characters: Apple-Windows-Linux

Hi!

I am just doing a project on web-based learning using apache/php/mysql. My problem is that I need to use German Umlaute (those with two dots over the a, o, and u). This does not seem to pose a big problem with Windows-based systems as I can set the characterset to ISO 8859-1. But what about an input from an Apple computer including Umlaute? My code would set the character set on the Apple's browser also to ISO 8859-1. Does the Apple recognise it? In case I set the charset to ISO-8859-1
1) Will the html send to the Apple still display Umlaute correctly even if I do not use entities (&#...😉 in the code?
2) Will an input sent through the apple's browser arrive as Umlaute or as funny 'Y's? At what stage does the character get changed from Umlaut to 'Y'?
3) How about Linux???
4) Would Uni-Code be the answer???

ä, ö and ï should display correctly on most, if not all PC systems. They're included in the ASCII standard character set, see ascii table.

However, Apple must have different numbers for each character. To test it, I wrote out a little text file with the "funny" chars, and transfered it to my Mac, and opened it there. See the image attached for the comparison.

So I suggest you rely in the html entities.

I'm sure Linux will support those too.

I was wondering if someone could help me.

I have the following in a MySQL dbase as a variable:
castel san niccolò

What I want to do is make a link from that variable but it screws up my html when I attempt:

Nearest Town: <a href="search_results.php?region=Tuscany&country=119&city=castel san niccolò" class=style3>castel san niccolò</a><BR>

I do not really want to edit/alter their text when inputed into the database or when taken from the dbase and outputted to the screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
