Can't connect to server to ftp

The code below keeps telling me that it couldn't connect to the server. Can someone tell me what I'm missing here? Thanks.

Have you tried with an FTP client? The code doesn't look obviously wrong in any way I can see...

There propably is no ftp server at the host you are trying to connect. In most of *NIX systems simply type ftp ftp.server.tld .
If it fails to connect...

Recommendations on an FTP client? Every OS I use has one built in....

Windows: get the shell up: "cmd" for 2k/XP; "dosprmpt" for 98/ME; and type 'ftp'.

'Nix: type "ftp" at the shell prompt.

Handy things to know:

"bin" - sets binary mode; or, most clients toggle with "type"
"pasv" sets passive mode on clients that recognize it
"ls" usually works on either platform, so does "dir" on many
"get", "put", etc.

If you want some fancy windows thingy, there's CuteFTP and a nice client from ipswitch.com (30 day eval)...but, IMO, why? 🙂

now i'm pretty confused. I'm trying to allow my users to upload pics and I was wanting to use an ftp script to do this.

You said that the script gives you an "can't connect" error. So what people are trying to say is, check you ftp server, if it works check username and password in the script. There's no use to have a php-ftp script if you don't have a ftp server or access to use it. Now see the point?

yep. i type in [url]ftp://ftp.server.com[/url] in my internet browser, give my credentials and I can access it no problem.

You've looked at the manual, we assume...

must be compiled with FTP support

in windows, ftp.dll must be in php.ini

some discussion on whether the host may be a dot-quad IP addy

... not trying to be an*l, just making sure we're covering all bases... 🙂

the server is linux running PHP 4.1.2. with FTP support enabled with a dot-quad IP addy. please be an@l. being thorough will probably be the only we I can fix this long-standing problem. any other thoughts?

OK, check that a call to phpinfo(); produces some string like '--enable-ftp' or '--with-ftp'....

Hey, wait a minute, something else... do you s'pose using the string 'ftp_connect' as a variable is a problem? Try changing that...

i changed it to $ftp_connect2 and the server is running --enable-ftp. thoughts?

Not really. By now, I'd have shelled in via SSH and tried 'ftp localhost' from the server, to the server ... but I own my own boxen. Firewalls, IP restrictions... I dunno.

just joined the "community" while looking for some stuff on ftp protocol and noticed your problem. Try removing the @ from @ftp_connect($server) function call. From your initial message it seems you're not getting past this call. See what message gets thrown up if any. The other thing to do is have a look in your php error file to see if any message is being reported there. Hope that helps, and that it hasn't come too late.
