Run mysql from CD Rom

Hi Guys!!!

I was wondering whether I can run MySQL/Apache/PHP from CD ROM?at least can we keep the mysql
database folder in a cd?

I'm trying to creat php search engin which should run by a CD(not online).can install php,apache,mysql to pc but database or data should have to kept in cd rom(to save disk space like in some games and encyclopedias)

if can is there a way to install MySQL/Apache/PHP in a single pack

you can try it and see , but there are some inevitable problems the most obvious being the changes done to the database. Since these files would be modified regularly.
But you could use a CD/RW in that case I suppose, need not say it isn't the best solution. Try some other storage media.

The Chance of this working properly all the time is very slim, having different drive names for the CD-ROM drive, but that shouldnt be too hard to fix within the Config files.

I think someone else here has also tried this, and not sure on the outcome of it. You may wanna search and see how they went with it.

database is READONLY.no editings or insertings!!!!main point is
saving HDD space by run the database with a CD ROM .

if it's a RO db than i don't see why it COULDNT run off a cd..... and seeing as it's an offline db i don't see y it would be bad to be able to move it around. i'd go ahead and try it at least.

i'm just saying that i would try burning the db folder to a cd and pointing mysql at it -- see what happens! if it works, great, if not, then tell us about it. that's all 🙂

OK I must be A total IDIOT "puting DB folder somewhere else and
pointing mysql at it"is one of the main things I want to learn becouse I have no idea how to do it!!!!!!!

if you know a way tell me I'll try out

well, i've never had to deal with it on *nix (just leave it as-is and forget about it) but in winXP there's a file called 'my.ini' and in there there is a line that reads sumtin like:

datadir=C:/mysql/data

all you need to do is change that to point to (on linux for example (if there is such a file on linux)) /cdrom/data/ and just have all the DB dirs in the data folder on the CD. that should work, but then i am a newb, might wanna get sum other opinion first :rolleyes:

I only want to run this in xp and win 98 . could you tell me where may I find my.ini file in win 98 and win xp ? I couldn't find it in mysql
folder or windows folder

well that's strange -- mine's in C:\WINDOWS\ on WinXP. try doing a start->(search|find) for my.ini -- i'm sure it's there somewhere? 😕

funny ,my office pc (only has win 98)doesn't have my.ini file!!
mysql version is 3.23.38 something wrong with version? or only
in win xp and win 2000?(search in "my computer" found nothing!!!)

One thing I can see about running something off a CD (especially data) is that it would be awfully slow - compared with running off a hard drive, and especially compared with running in core.

It would be !!but still main thing is saving disk HDD space there

would be a 500 mb read only database(or file system).so have to
find a way there are two softwares for this but bit expensive!!!
