Honestly, if that's something you have to ask, I don't think you exactly know what's entailed. But I'm working on one now, and I learned plenty from

Read over some stuff and when you can write a mySQL query to extract the value of the field "fu" from the table "bar", I'll help further ;p

Not when you keep meaning to make one, get halfway through, get frustrated and quit... and repeat that three times... there's lots of code leftover to reuse! ;p

Hmm.. if it takes you that long your trying to do to much.

Im creating one now, just gotta a few more templates to make, a bit of php to do, then start on the admin, its only taken 1month and thats pretty on and off.

But seriously forums arent hard, unless you try to have all this stuff to start off with..

If you want a basic forum.

So, maybe you want forum categories, than have forums in that category.

You may want a PM system and basically thats all a real basic forum needs besides creating threads and replying to them.

It can be quite easy, and if you want to add to it slowly you can do so, as long as you make sure you comment very well..

I created a little small forum in 1 day! It wasn't like this one, but I am sure it wouldn't have taken me much longer to do one like this. It was so easy.. so if you are taking 2 years to make a forum, then you must have started when you didn't know PHP. I find it easy, but it also has to do if you understand how it works too. I had users, profiles for the users, just took 1 day.

I also made a pretty simple forum in one day. I made it to compliment my website and I have catogories, threads, replies, members everything that a forum for just 1 website would need. Just start and make a REALLY basic forum for example just post a topic and it writes it to a table on a page, almost like a guest book, then just build it from there, thats what I did.

Don't get scared by people telling you that it will take years to build - you should have a working "prototype" of your forum in a couple of days!
