[Resolved] submit button question

I have a form that uses php to check for required fields and then submit the form. Problem is that it only works if I use the standard submit button from dreamweaver. What I want is to have a rollover image as the submit button to do the same thing, but as soon as I change it to the image, the form doesn't work. Everytime you click the button, it seems like it just refreshes the page.

Can anyone help?

on the image do an onClick="document.all.FormName.submit()" that will submit the form when the image is clicked

Nope, still not working.

This is what I have;

I have also replaced the <$PHP_SELF?> with document.all.order.submit() and I get an error that says this object does not support this method.

So now what?

You should be able to add in the onMouseOver= bits with no problem, and you could probably use onClick= for the Javascript submit as well, BUT I'm not sure if all browsers support that...

for the roll over images i would recommend putting them in the img tag, and to edit superwormys code he has put a space in javascript

<a href="java script:window.document.MyFormName.submit();"><img src="/myImage.jpg"></a>

which would cause a problem

no I still haven't gotten it to work. Actually as soon as I name the form to name="orderForm" and then use <a href="javascript:window.document.orderForm.submit()> It tries to link to an external page and I get a page not found error. I also tried placing <? $PHP_SELF ?> as the href and all the page does is refresh but doesn't run the php script. Then if I use the standard submit button and still have the form named "orderForm" it won't work either. I have to remove name="orderForm" in order for it to work.

I will just keep messing around with it until I get it. I'll post again if I still come up with nothing.

Wait... if a standard submit button dosen't work... then theres something else wrong too, or your browser is messed up or something...

Can you post all your HTML for the form?

The code is too long to put on this forum, so I have attached in a zip file. This is using the standard button which works. It seems like it won't work if I have the form named though. I don't know why.

It will work with this submit button, but I don't want to use that one.

I havn't looked through the whole thing... but it looks like you have SEVERAL forms nested inside of each other, which definitally causes huge problems, especially with submits.

HTML does not allow nested HTML forms, so fix that.

Also, you should be quoting array keys, ie $POST['key'] or $POST["key"] AND NOT: $_POST[key]

Both work, but $_POST[key] with no quotes is wrong, according to the PHP manual section about arrays.

Actually there is only one form on the page. Unless you are talking about the bits of PHP code then yes there are several for keeping track of the values once they have been filled in in case of an error, so that the user doesn't have to re-fill in the information again. Such as for where it asks the user for their state I have this php code to construct the drop down list for the states:

Do you mean having multiple (isset($submit)) as the multiple forms?

Otherwise there is only one.

I will put quotes around my array keys and see if it helps. Although the way I have it setup right now everythings works with the standard submit button.

Noooo... your code definitally has more than one form nested in another, heres a snippet from the end-user HTML when I view-source in browser:

okay, I have gotten rid of the forms. I now only have one. I have tried using the <a href="javascript:window.document.orderForm.submit();>" and it doesn't work. All I get when I use this is an error: page not found.

I have also tried using this without a rollover but just a single image and it doesn't work.

When I use the one above and have the form named to "orderForm" this is what comes up in the address bar and no page found error.

if I set the href to <? $PHP_SELF ?> instead of the javascript:window.document bla bla bla, then it just takes me to my home page(root).

I am at a loss.

IMAGE SUBMIT variable names

When submitting a form, it is possible to use an image instead of the standard submit button with a tag like:
<input type="image" src="image.gif" name="sub">
When the user clicks somewhere on the image, the accompanying form will be transmitted to the server with two additional variables, sub_x and sub_y. These contain the coordinates of the user click within the image. The experienced may note that the actual variable names sent by the browser contains a period rather than an underscore, but PHP converts the period to an underscore automatically.

Yeah, everything works exactly as it should, I just loaded this page: www.whatnott.com/newsite/order.php, saved the source, changed the following, and it works perfectly.

Form open tag should look like this:
<form method="post" action="/page_to_post_to.php" name="orderForm">

Submit button changed to look like this:
<a href="javascript:window.document.orderForm.submit();"><img src=""></a>

You should be able to add the image rollover by looking at the other examples from there. I added it and it worked fine. Remember that that submit button image name can't have the same name as any other image.

If it doesn't work, reread directions to figure it out / check if Javascript works in your browser / post your full code again so I can continue debugging.

superwormy, first of all I want to say thank you for your help so far. Although it still isn't working for me. I have attached the code again with the changes you suggested (I think). I know javascript is enabled in my browser also.

Now when I click the submit button, this alert error pops up.
Error: Object doesn't support this property or method.

Would you visit the page as I have it now and see if you get the same error when you click the button?

You can't name your image name="submit" because then orderForm.submit() tries to call the function submit for your image :-)

Name your image anything else but submit ( submit2 works fine for example ) and it works fine :-)
