Lol, Stupid question - totally forgot

Hey, sorry to ask this lol, I didnt want to. But i need to goto bed for tonight and really wanna know how to do it

Got a html form: name,email, etc .. vars, and when I post the info to self i cant seem to remember how to grab the info when it posts it back onto itself

like
<input type="text" name="aname">

how would i in php display what the person typed?
<? echo $aname ?> etc..
ive tried $GET, $REQUEST, $_FORM, $FORM{$aname}

Tried everything i can think of, but just cant remember how

If the method is "post":
<form action="..." method="post">
<input type="text" name="aname">
....

echo $_POST['aname'];
//in older PHP versions:
echo $HTTP_POST_VARS['aname']

One more thing,

I have a php book, and the example it gives to insert is:

$query = "insert into books values ('".$isbn."', '".$author."', '".$title."', '".$price."')";

And those are the fields it inputs into the DB, but I did somewhat the same thing on my query string

$query = "INSERT INTO DBname VALUES ('$val1', '$val2', '$val3', '$val3', '$val4')";

and then ran it on the db, but It doesnt add it to the db.
do I have to put $_POST['val1'] for every val there?

Ive done this before and never had too

Well, if register_gobals is off in the php.ini you have to do this.

I've found a little script which can save much time if there are a lot of variables:

Ok, that script is niccee.. I understand up until the:
if (@(${'HTTP' . $type . 'VARS'}) > 0)

but I dont know how to link my vars into it.

I see it takes the get,post,etc.. and puts it into the $type var, so the type would be the form submit type,
I tried HTTP_POST_VARS['var'] and it worked, so I know that much

but I dont get how to link it into all my vars, could you explain a bit? or give an example.

Aslo the @ sign on @, ive always wondered why those are there, Ive seen them before but I cant remember what I used it for

that code will automatically take any variables from the arrays specified, so when you post your variables are automatically transformed, so you dont have to pass anything into it. just put it at the top of your page...
the @ sign is used for error supression.

so if you do include("./inexistant_file.php");

you will get

Warning: main(./inexistant_file.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /path/to/script/script.php on line x

but with

@include("./inexistant_file.php);

it wont be included but the error message wont be displayed in the output

One more thing kinda mysql problem, but might aswell post it

when im inserting/deleteing entries out of the db with like

$query = insert into thedb ($1, $2, $3, $4);
etc, or something of that sort
I finally got tired of it not working at put that
or die ("Can't connect because ".mysql_error());
on the back of it

and it tells me it cant post because thedb.thedb doesnt exist
and to make it post to the right table I have to put thedb.thetbl

In the example scripts ive seen I never saw that. is there another way around it? or do I just need to add that .tblname ?

works now tho, just, will adding the .tblname mess things up when I begin working w/ multiable tables in one db?

the proper and easy way to begin executing mysql queries is to do the following first:

mysql_connect("localhost","dbuser","dbpass"); //log in to the server

mysql_select_db("db_name") or die("Could not select db " . mysql_error());

$query = "INSERT INTO tableName VALUES(...)";
$result = mysql_query($query);

mysql_select_db("db_name") or die("Could not select db " . mysql_error());

This looks like a better way than what I'm about to suggest, but I thought it might have some value for other situations.

Instead of the line above, you can send some SQL to do it:

use DBName; //this is SQL and not PHP

Also I noticed a question earlier which I'm not sure if it got answered:

$var1=$_POST['var1']; //Gets posted var and sticks it into $var1
$_POST['var1']=$var1; //Puts $var1 back into the POSTed var

The second line is more useful when working with $_SESSION['var1'].
