Is it a good idea to use parse_ini_file() function for the script settings?

I want to use this function for my script settings:

Will my script be compatible with any server settings?!

I didn't understand the fallowing note from the link mentioned above:

Note: Since PHP 4.2.1 this function is also affected by safe mode and open_basedir.

safe_mode in PHP stops you from doing a bunch of things, lots of functions are affected by this, go read the manual for a complete description...

On a side note, I rather like parse_ini_file() because its not PHP specific, if I need to, I can get at that file with Perl or another CGI language and use the same variable names with no issues and no tricky syntax to deal with.

Holy frick, no one here can give you an answer!

AS THE MANUAL STATES, it depends on the setup of your webserver and of PHP ( php.ini )

Find out if safe_mode is on or off and if its on, find out what settings are being used with it, then you can go read the manual and see how it will affect you / this function call.

Certain functions in PHP can be disabled completely with safe_mode, but theres no way for anyone on this board to tell you which ones are enabled / disabled on your webserver.

So the answer is, it depends. Go get some docs, talk to your sysadmin, and read the manual again.
