Frustrating, mail()

i have been trying for the past week to get
<?php
mail()
?>
to work but i know you have to set up php to send the mail using a smtp server

NOW the tricky part

i am running MAC OS X SERVER 10.2.6

and i just have the PHP that was installed with MAC OS X.2.6 Server... i need to know how to tell it the correct way to send an email.. this is really getting me pissed so if some one knows how to set it up let me know asap.
