Why does this not work...

$sql = 'SELECT item, DATE_FORMAT( date, \' %m/%d/%Y \' ) , COMMENT FROM 1stop_bedroom LIMIT 0, 30';

the query above works in perl. why does in not work in PHP.. although phpmysql outputs this as a query.. thanks..

Try using backticks on field names...One thought might be the date fieldname...it might be a reserved function word.

Try this:

ummm...is "COMMENT" a field in your db since you seem to be CAPITALIZING reserved words? I'll assume it is as there is no COMMENT reserved word that I know of.

$sql = 'SELECT item, DATE_FORMAT( date, \' %m/%d/%Y \' ) , COMMENT FROM 1stop_bedroom LIMIT 0, 30';

if you input like what you have specified it the ' before the %m%d%y will bound the first half.. and so it will not work..

first of all what errors if any are you getting, second try this

$sql = "SELECT item, DATE_FORMAT( date,' %m/%d/%Y ' ) , COMMENT FROM 1stop_bedroom LIMIT 0, 30";
